Despite
the discouraging weather, 16 hardy painters turned out on 7th
July to paint local scenes. They had a maximum of six hours to complete
a painting and return it to the church, starting with a blank canvas or
paper. The results were displayed in the church the following day. The
congregation at the 10am service were invited to vote for their three
favourite paintings, and to make a sealed bid to purchase any of them.
The
results exceeded all expectations. Some really accomplished paintings
were produced - mainly watercolours but there were also three very
accomplished oils. Some painters even produced two paintings. The
gathering after the service turned out to be a very enjoyable social
occasion, with everybody voting and many bidding for the pictures.
Ten of the pictures were sold: together with the entry fees these
raised over £360 towards the Community Project. Prizes
were generously donated by ‘Authors and Artists’ and ‘Fleet
Photographic’ (both shops in Fleet High Street) and by Sainsbury’s (Watchmoor
Park in Camberley).The first prize was won by Geoffrey Ainley for his
painting of the lychgate, second was Peter Forey’s scene of Fleet High
Street, then Ria Cornell’s
large oil of a woodland scene and Jenny Thorne’s lovely oil of the
churchyard at All Saints’church. Thanks
