Friends
of the Gurkhas (NE Hants) was formed in May 2001, to maintain contact
with the Gurkhas and to continue fundraising for their specific charity,
The Gurkha Welfare Trust. Gurkhas
were stationed at QEII Barracks, Church Crookham for 29 years
(1971-2000). They were much
admired by local residents for their excellent discipline, friendly
nature and smart appearance. In
August 2000 they sadly had to leave Fleet and are now based at
Shorncliffe, Folkestone, Kent. Fund raising by Friends of the Gurkhas is entirely for the benefit of the Gurkha Welfare Trust. Events so far comprise the Official Launch, a Flag Day, 2 Band Concerts and a Slide Show of Nepal. Generous donations and fund raising so far have enabled Friends of the Gurkhas (NE Hants) to contribute £22,000 to the Gurkha Welfare Trust HQ in London. |

The Gurkha Welfare Trust is a charity whose funds are used solely for the benefit of non-pensionable ex-British Army Gurkhas or their widows and families and provide £20 per month, enabling at least subsistence levels of living for them. Currently some 11,400 families are supported in this way. An official sponsorship scheme enables the adoption of a family for £20 per month. Contact the Group for further details.
