If
you are disabled or are interested in helping us achieve our aims why not join
us every month. We organise Site visits, audits, talks and networking.
How to Avoid Problems
Many
access problems can be overcome with just a little extra thought.
Décor -
contrast doors and walls. This will help visually impaired to identify where the
door is. Glass panels in doors will help someone in a wheelchair see or be seen
when opening a door. Lever handles instead of round knobs will make door opening
easier if hands are weak or stiff.
Seating - have a few high seated chairs with arms, these are easier to get into and out of for those less able to lift themselves.
Parking - Keep disabled bays for the disabled.
Long corridors - need a seat or handrails for those less able to walk and may need a rest.
Steps - avoid where possible, even the smallest step can trip someone who is unsteady on their feet or unable to see properly.
Intercoms/bells - remember some people cannot hear a bell or voice intercom, add a light so that you know you have heard them.
Public
Buildings -
Advise reception if you have a hearing or sight problem - this can help get
first hand advice about fire drill and most staff do have training in disability
awareness. There may be a loop system which is not advertised.
Check if there is a lift, where is the alternative if it breaks down?
Are areas/departments clearly sign-posted? If not why not?
Don't know who to tell about these problems? Try ACCESS we may be able to help
change these problem areas to be user friendly.
