History Of NEHWACA
NEHWACA was set up in 1982 following an initiative by the Hampshire Youth and Community Adult Education Service, to provide a water activity programme for young people in North East Hampshire, using local water facilities, especially the Basingstoke Canal.
The Centre is situated at Court Moor School, Fleet, with the full support of the Head Master, School Governors and the Education Authority. A landing stage was built along the bank of the Basingstoke Canal.
A managing body was formally elected in 1983, which included representatives from Guides, Scouts, Youth Clubs, Church Groups, Hampshire Education Authorities Youth Service, Court Moor School Head Master, Governors, Basingstoke Canal Management and Instructors. NEHWACA at present has a Partnership Agreement with Hampshire County Council Youth Service.
The centre provides canoes and kayaks, buoyancy aids, paddles and British Canoe Union Instructors. User Groups pay a fee for canoe hire and Instructor. Other monies are raised through grants and fund raising.
NEHWACA operates mainly from April to October. Groups can hire the equipment and provide their own Instructors.
