RESULTS FOR 2004 - 2005
8th March 2005
Fleet Men's 3rd XI  (4) vs. Yateley 6th XI (1)

Fleet 3rds XI returned to winning ways this weekend in a keenly fought encounter with local rivals Yateley in which Fleet ran out 4 – 1 victors. The first half ended 1 – 1 having seen Carl Young collect the ball well outside the D and dribbling past several players before beating the goalkeeper. Fleet dominated for much of the second half and squandered several chances before a well worked short corner routine put Rob Scott on the score sheet. This was quickly followed by two further gaols from captain, Rob Belsher. Yateley responded and only stout defending ensured there were no further changes to the score line.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (1) vs. City of Portsmouth 1st XI (0)
Fleet returned to league action after a few weeks break with a visit to
Portsmouth on a bitterly cold Saturday morning. Fleet looked very rusty in
the opening exchanges and Portsmouth piled on the early pressure. Fleet
weathered the initial storm and gradually started to get back into the game,
and near the end of the first half took the lead with a well taken
individual goal. With Fleet creating the majority of chances they could and
should have increased the lead, however, with a solitary goal lead, there
was always the danger that Portsmouth would get a breakaway goal. Early in
the second half Portsmouth won a penalty flick but when they failed to
convert following a fine save, Fleet made the game safe. This was a game
where the result was more important than the performance, and Fleet will
surely play better in the remaining two games of the season.

19 Feb 2005
Fleet Men's 2nd XI  (3) vs. Wimborne 2nd XI (1)

Fleet inflicted the first home defeat of the season on a very strong Wimborne side. An outstanding defensive performance soaked up wave after wave of Wimborne attacking pressure, including ten short corners. Jon McCall had his best game of the season in goal and the midfield quartet worked tirelessly throughout in conjunction with the ever dependable FB4 . At the other end, chances were carved out purely in freeplay on the counter, where the value of a striker in form was amply demonstrated by another Gary (smiling assassin) Madge hat-trick.

Fleet Men's 3rd XI  (2) vs. Swanage 1st XI (3)

Swanage started strongly against a 10-man Fleet side and took an early lead. Only an excellent penalty flick save from Jonathan Camp prevented Fleet from going further behind.

Some sterling defence from Chris Edmonds helped turn the tide and Fleet’s Mark Woolford grabbed a deserved equalizer just before half-time.

After the break, Swanage exerted further pressure and regained the lead with a skilful passing move. This spurred Fleet into action again and despite a nasty injury to James Edwards, a period of sustained attacking gave Charlie Colbeck the space to equalize for Fleet with a neat reverse-stick shot.

Swanage responded immediately and took a 3:2 lead with a strong shot from the edge of the area.

Despite continuous pressure from Fleet right to the end, Swanage held on for a hard fought victory.

12 Feb 2005
Fleet Men's 2nd XI  (4) vs. Southampton 2nd XI (2)
Despite the result, this was a close run thing. It was another superb team effort – and with three walking wounded hobbling as best they could, the team ground out a great result against a much stronger Southampton side (who had scored six against US Portsmouth the week before).

We got off to a flying start when a defence splitting pass in the first minute from Jeff Lucas put Gary Madge one-on-one with the keeper. Cue David Coleman… “1-0!”. After that, Southampton piled on the pressure, eventually scoring from a short corner. Not to be outdone, a well worked short corner saw Gary Madge put Jeff Lucas in the clear for JL’s second goal of the season. 2-1 at the break.

Back came Southampton, with another short corner goal early in the second half. There ensued the hockey equivalent of trench warfare – both sides slugging it out for long periods without reward. Then came a turning point. A Southampton forward slipped the otherwise resolute and robust Fleet defence and missed from two yards out… whilst from the resulting 16, FHC2XI went down the other end and Gary Madge forced the ball over the line. Shortly afterwards, Geoff Slack scored the fourth and, against a tiring opposition, the game was won. GM would have completed another hat-trick with the last hit of the game, except for Gibson getting in the way

Fleet Men's 3rd XI  (5) vs. Fareham 8th XI (2)
After a cautious start, Fleet put together some excellent passes and started to control the midfield. Their patience paid off when Carol Young scored the first goal and soon after Charlie Colbeck fired a well executed second goal. Carl scored his second goal and Fleet were cruising at half time. After the interval Fleet continued in the same vein and were soon 4 goals up through a well taken individual goal by Ollie Edmonds. The hosts came back with two late consolation goals with Rob Scott having the final say for Fleet. Overall Fleet displayed some excellent passing up-front and were backed up with staunch defence.  Man of the match was Carl Young.

5 Feb 2005
Fleet Men's 2nd XI  (5) vs. Basingstoke 2nd XI (2)
Once Fleet got to grips with the extra bounce on the water-based astro, the team produced a gutsy second-half performance to repeat the score from earlier in the season. Two goals in the first 5 minutes of the second half deflated the opposition, who up to that point were proving a real threat at 1-1. Basingstoke managed to score and continued to press. In the process, however, they left themselves short at the back and we scored two further goals to secure the points.

Goals: Geoff Slack (2), Phil Hutson, Paul Gibson, GaryMadge

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (0) vs. Southampton 1st XI (0)
Fleet travelled to Southampton on Saturday on a cold and overcast morning. With just 10 available players, Fleet were still able to demonstrate the superiority illustrated by their respective league positions and quickly put Southampton under pressure. Creating numerous chances through the game, only a fine performance by the Southampton goalkeeper prevented Fleet taking the lead. Southampton only looked dangerous on the break, and almost took the lead against the run of play when they hit the post midway through the first half. However, this was their only real chance in the game. Fleet dominated the game but were unable to make the breakthrough they deserved, and the game eventually finished all square.

Fleet Ladies 2nd XI  (1) vs. Basingstoke 5th XI (0)
This proved to be a totally frustrating game where the score did not reflect the possession dominance achieved by Fleet. Fleet were both persistent and tenacious in their play but could not get the ball past Basingstoke's goalie, who should play for their first team not their fifth! Within the first 5 minutes of play, Fleet were clearly dominating and even after 7 successive attempts on the goal, the ball would not go in! Fleet's goalie, Emma Gilbert came into contact with the ball only 3 times - she was really cold by them end of the game. Catherine Allen tried out in the ladies for the first time and wasn't scared off and we welcomed another new player, Sallie Blanks. Fleet battled on but managed only one goal but a clear win. Especially good play from Cara and Denise and man of the match was awarded to Sally Ockwell-Page.

29 January 2005
Fleet Men's 2nd XI  (5) vs. Alton 2nd XI (0)
This was a good all round performance from Fleet, with Carl Young, Rob Scott and Martin Camp helping out in the seconds and all having good games.

The Alton side started with 10 players and where later to lose a further player due to injury. This helped Fleet to play good flowing hockey with Gary Madge scoring another hat-trick, with Phil Hutson and Geoff Slack adding one each. Geoff slack from the penalty flick spot. This keeps Fleet at the top of the table by one point.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (3) vs. Petersfield 1st XI (2)
Fleet entertained Petersfield Ladies on Saturday. The Petersfield team looked to be significantly changed and stronger than the team Fleet had easily beaten earlier in the season, and the opening exchanges were quite even. After 20 minutes, Fleet took the lead, but were almost immediately pegged back when Petersfield scored on the break. Fleet nudged ahead again soon after with a well taken short corner, only for Petersfield to hit back again soon afterwards with the ball somehow ending in the goal after some scrappy play. The second half was much more comfortable for Fleet as they nullified the long ball game that Petersfield were relying on. Midway through the half, Fleet took a winning lead, and never really looked troubled for the remainder of the game. Although not the most attractive game to watch, Fleet worked really hard to secure a well deserved victory.

22 January
Fleet Men's 2nd XI  (3) vs. US Portsmouth 2nd XI (2)
This was a difficult game against a much stronger US Portsmouth. Having taken a two goal lead through Gary Madge and Matt Viney, Fleet were pegged back to 2-2 with goals conceded at short corners. Sadly the game deteriorated to a bad tempered affair towards the end, largely as the result of some sordid umpiring. But the players’ collective resolve was strengthened and up popped Matt Viney to score the winner with seconds left to play.

Fleet Men's 3rd XI  (7) vs. Bordon Harlequins 2nd XI (0)
A very pleasing 7-0 win for Fleet. With 4 goals in the first half, 1 for Martin Camp, 1 for Rob Scott , 1 for Rob Belsher and 1 for Carl Young. Also Jonathan Camp made 2 great saves, giving him a well deserved clean sheet.

The second half saw Rob Belsher decided to go down the left and 3 more goals came in quick succession. 1 from Rob Belsher and 2 from Martin Camp, giving him his hatrick.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (3) vs. Romsey 1st XI (0)
Fleet entertained Romsey Ladies on a sunny but chilly day on Saturday, keen
to gain revenge for the surprise defeat inflicted by Romsey earlier in the
season. Within 10 minutes Fleet took the lead, with a well taken goal high
into the net from Sharon Hough which gave the Romsey goalkeeper no chance.
Fleet maintained a firm grip of the game, never really being troubled in
defence. After 25 minutes, Fleet extended their lead with the ball being
forced into the goal following a rebound off the post from a short corner,
number 2 for Hough. Fleet continued to maintain control in the second half,
and midway through the half went another goal ahead to make the game safe.
With Romsey forced into the long hopeful ball, Fleet easily saw out the end
of the game.

Fleet Ladies 2nd XI  (2) vs. US Portsmouth 1st XI (1)
The first half proved to be challenging with United Services finding our weakness on the pitch and using it to their advantage. We conceded a goal and felt quite hard done by at half time.

A couple of changes on the pitch meant that Fleet had a stronger second half, although it was still a real fight. The players were some what distracted by the sideline banter and drunken comments, but never the less managed to pull back and score 2 goals.. The first goal was slipped in by Cara Newman and the second came from a touch by Michelle Turner from a short corner, returning after 8 weeks out from a broken collar bone. A good effort by the team with another new youngster, Roxy Todd and another outstanding performance by Sarah Colpus, who was awarded Man of the Match.

15 Jan 2005
Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (1) vs. New Milton 1st XI (2)
Fleet went down to their first defeat of the season against a very strong  and well disciplined New Miltonside, who had too much for a spirited and incredibly determined Fleet side.

Fleet began the game under pressure from a team benefiting from additions to their squad, yet defended stoutly from the front with Madge ploughing a lone furrow up front.

Fleet were at a disadvantage when Slack was injured in the warm up, but Gasser showed excellent
discipline and resolve in an unaccustomed role.

Despite the excellent defending however Fleet could not hold out and a scrambled effort from New Milton resulted in the ball being squeezed over the line.

This acted as a spur to Fleet who started to hit on the counter effectively, and this was shown in the fact that Fleet had 6 short Corners to zero from New Milton.

From a short corner, Hutson scored following a well drilled move and Fleet had the upper hand.

However numbers and fitness told in the second half, and whilst Fleet had an excellent chance to win it
when Madge forced an excellent save from the New Milton goalkeeper it was New Milton who had the
majority of the play and scored a well worked goal with about 10 minutes to go.

Fleet probably gave their best efforts of the season and can hold their head high as this result still
leaves them top of the table.

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (0) vs. Trojans 5th XI (0)
This was a closely fought game which ended fairly at 0 - 0. Trojans had a
goal disallowed in the first half and Fleet created many chances to score,
including a penalty flick, but failed to find the back of the net.
Jonathan Camp had a fine game in the Fleet goal making several fine saves.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (1) vs. Eastleigh Ladies (2)
Fleet travelled to play Eastleigh in a very scrappy encounter on Saturday.
On a damp, miserable morning, the play reflected the weather, with neither
side playing particularly well. Fleet eventually managed to break the
deadlock on the stroke of half time with a well struck short corner, but
straight from the re-start, following some sloppy play by Fleet, Eastleigh
pulled level with a well taken goal. With neither side being able to string
any meaningful passes together, the game looked to be heading for a dour
draw, but 5 minutes before the end, Fleet conceded a penalty stroke which
was converted to give Eastleigh a well fought victory. This was a
disappointing performance and result for Fleet, and they will need to
demonstrate some bounce-back-ability next week if they are to retain any
chance of promotion this season.

4 Dec 04
Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (2) vs. Petersfield 2nd XI (0)
Fleet overcame Fordingbridge in a scrappy match that saw plenty of Fleet players below par. Against a side struggling in the lower reaches of the league Fleet did not raise their game and a series of sloppy passes and mistimed tackles saw Fleet looking at their first defeat.Gary Madge the leading goal scorer dug the team out of the hole it was in with a well-taken goal and despite a little rally and more pressure from Fleet they could only increase the lead again through Gary Madge.

The Fordingbridge keeper made a series of saves and Fleet missed several chances that may have calmed nerves, as it was with 5 minutes to go, Jonathan McCall the Fleet goalkeeper was yellow carded, allowing a glimmer of hope to Fordingbridge. Yet again Michael Meakin went in goal and yet again kept a clean sheet as the Fleet defence kept out all Fordingbridge's frantic efforts.

Fleet have played better this season, but still did enough to win and keep another clean sheet.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (3) vs. Waterside (0)
Fleet travelled to Southampton on Saturday to play Waterside Ladies.
Waterside put Fleet under early pressure and had the ball in the net, only
to be called back for an earlier infringement. Fleet struggled to get into
the game against the "route one" style of play adopted by Waterside.
Eventually, Fleet started to counter the Waterside threat, and finally
started to get their passing game going, striking two goals before half
time. The second half was a well fought contest, with Fleet converting
midway through the half to make the game safe.

27 Nov 04
Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (5) vs. Yateley 3rd XI (0)
Fleet comfortably won this local derby, but did not perform to the recent high standards seen.
On a crisp day the pitch was greasy underfoot and this led to some early errors on both sides,
however Fleet settled better and a fine solo effort from Hutson put Fleet 1-0 up.

The rest of the half was ragged and Fleet had to defend earnestly with McCall in goal earning
his clean sheet with a series of saves.

In the second half Fleet came alive and once again had the clinical finishing of Madge, with his
fourth hat trick in a row to ensure that Fleet won comfortably. In between numbers 2 and three for
Madge a fine solo effort from Lucas, following an excellent tackle made the score line a little flattering.

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (10) vs. Yateley 6th XI (0)
After their rather lacklustre display the previous week, Fleet's 3rd XI sprang in to life against Yateley's 6th team giving an excellent performance throughout. They were quickly in to their stride pushing the ball around well and creating many chances. Goals quickly followed and at half time Fleet were 3-0 up including a rare contribution on the goal front from James Edwards. In the second half Fleet continued the good work and outplayed a gallant Yateley side who never gave up trying. A further seven goals were added as Fleet ran out 10-0 winners. The other scorers were Rob Scott (2), Martin Camp (2), Kenny Marsden (2), Mark Woolford, Nick Williams and Matthew Gasser.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (6) vs. City of Portsmouth 2nd XI (2)
Fleet entertained City of Portsmouth on Saturday in what was an entertaining
and ultimately very successful game. The opening exchanges were very evenly
matched, but the pressure applied by Fleet gradually paid dividends as they
moved to a 2 goal lead. Fleet were unfortunate to concede a short corner,
which Portsmouth scored from, but then soon regained their 2 goal advantage
with another well worked goal. The second half continued with Fleet moving
the ball around well and applying great pressure to regain the ball whenever
it was lost. With Portsmouth reduced to 10 players, Fleet were consistently
on top, with only some excellent defensive play from Portsmouth keeping the
score down. The second half eventually ended with 3 additional Fleet goals,
and a breakaway effort from Portsmouth. Overall this was a comfortable
victory for Fleet, and the performance bodes well for the upcoming games.
Special mention should be made of Karen Ferguson for scoring a hat-trick of
superbly taken individual goals.

20 November 04
Fleet Mens 1st XI  (2) vs. Winborne Wayfarers 1st XI (2)
Fleet extended their unbeaten home record to 19 games with a 2-2 draw
against Wimborne Wayferers. After conceeding a sloppy early goal stand in
skipper Alban Desouza never doubted his sides 'Bouncebackability'. WIthin 5
minutes Fleet showed why they are second in the table as they scythed
through the Wimborne defence with a great move between Sands and Smith,
with stricker Stuart Lavine finishing cooly. Fleet continued threatening
the Wimborne goal, and 5 minutes before half time Richard Eggleshaw smashed
in a reverse stick strike to make it 2-1. From the restart Fleet continued
their domination creating chance after chance, but unfortunately unable to
finish. A lapse in concentration let Wimborne in for their equalizer which
robbed Fleet of all 3 points.

Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (6) vs. Petersfield Panthers (0)
Another fine team performance. Geoff Slack scored after 90 seconds to set the pattern of the game and Matt Viney and Mike Meakin provided plenty of width and pace in attack to allow Gary Madge to complete another hat-trick. Then... Gary Ferguson scored his first goal for Fleet with a penalty stroke that went in off the keeper (<--- they all count). On the overlap, fullbacks Dave Watler and Alan Dow found themselves suffering altitude sickness in the D, but it was another fullback - Gavin England - who showed them how to score with a well struck shot from the edge of the D (Ed. Oddly enough, Gavin maintained a dignified silence about his achievements?). Whilst the entire defence wasn't in attack, they once again restricted the opposition to few shots at goal, which replacement goalkeeper Jonathan Camp dealt with comfortably to maintain a clean sheet

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (2) vs. Sabah 1st XI (0)
After a bit of a struggle, and playing through snow at one point, a depleted 3rds came away with a 2 – 0 victory. In truth we were reliant on the opposition to deflect both gaols into their net, but a win is a win nonetheless. My thanks to Chris Collins for standing in as goalkeeper and Jack Scott for making up the numbers. Both played well as did our two wingers Carl Young and James Maull.

The first goal came in the first half from open play in which James Maull beat the left back, moved into the D and struck the ball hard. A deflection off a defenders stick saw the ball beat the goalkeeper and hit the backboard. In the second half, Mark Woolford collected the ball from a short corner hit and struck the ball along the ground. Again the ball hit a defenders stick and looped upwards over the goalkeeper.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (3) vs. Andover 1st XI (5)
Fleet travelled to Andover and started the game with only 10 players, and in
10 minutes, Fleet were already 2-0 down. And at half time had a comfortable
4-0 interval lead. Fleet started the second half in a much more positive
mood, and finally started getting into the game pulling back two goals. As
Fleet piled on the pressure, they were awarded a penalty flick, which was
coolly slotted home, to give Fleet hope of a remarkable comeback.
Unfortunately Andover scored a breakaway fifth goal, and Fleet eventually
ran out of time to get back into the game. All in all, this was a very
disappointing result, resulting mainly from a very poor first half showing.
Fleets second half display was much better, and if they can take that good
form into their upcoming games, more positive results will surely follow ...

13 Nov 2004
Fleet Mens 1st XI  (2) vs. Southampton 1st XI (1)
After a bright Start, Fleet soon took the lead through Richard Eggleshaw, after a well worked Short corner.  Fleet kept on the pressure, and could have scored again if not for the rather fortunate Uni Keeper.  Just before half time, S’ton equalised after creating pressure themselves.  The second half started like the first, Fleet creating chance after chance, but on 55 minutes, Matt DeSouza scored what was to be the winner.  After the game, Fleet’s skipper Matt, had this to say:

“Away from home, against a team on form, and 3 points, we’ll take that.  The boys did good today” Fleet’s Game on Saturday is at home against Wimborne.  Fleets 100 per cent home record has extended to over 12 months (18 games), lets hope this continues.

Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (7) vs. Winbourne Wayfarers 2nd XI (1)
The 2nd XI carried on there winning, with a good result that was straight from the training ground. As Coach/Captain Paul Gibson said, every training move happened in the game, it was great to watch. The goals where scored by Gary Madge getting his second hat trick of the season, returning from the treatment table, Matt Viney, Richard Potter, Kenny Marsden on loan from the 3rds and saving the best 'til last, DAVE WATLER.
This result now gives Fleet a 4 point gap over there nearest rivals New Milton.

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (1) vs. Swanage 1st XI (4)
This game was a top of the table clash as Fleet were 2nd in the league and Swanage were 3rd.

1st half Swanage played strongly in the first half going 1, 0 up within the first twenty minutes. Fleet defended well with a few good goalie saves that kept the team on course. Some good plays were made by both teams which kept the competition alive. The score stayed persistent and the 1, 0 lead to swanage remained all the way up to the halftime whistle.

2nd half It was a good start for fleet as they continued to build up the pressure against the home team and marginally missed out on some greatly needed goals. However swanage managed to snatch another goal with a flooky bit of goal hanging. Fleet pushed on desperately and half way through the 2nd half there prays were answered with a well struck short corner scored by Gavin which had the goalie clueless. 2, 1 And with a while to go Fleet were on the offensive. With 15 minutes to go Swanage again managed to slip one past the keeper.
Fleet were demoralised but not defeated until the final blow was struck by Swanage in where they yet again scored with 5 minutes to the final whistle.

The overall score was Swanage 4, Fleet 1, an undeserving lose for the fleet 3rd team. The refereeing in the match was not up to standards and was thoroughly disappointing. Both referees were provided by Swanage and Swanage was able to get away with many illegal moments in which a better refereed game would not go unpunished. Fleet are expecting a more hopeful game against swanage next time they meet.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (1) vs. Southampton 3rd XI (0)
Fleet entertained Southampton ladies in uncharacteristic November sunshine.
Fleet turned in a strong performance, with the ball being moved
around well. The Southampton side were under constant pressure, and did well
to keep a clean sheet in the first period, where Fleet had numerous chances
to go ahead. Fleet did "score" just before half time, only for the umpire to
rule it out for an earlier offence. The second half continued where the
first had left off, with Fleet creating numerous chances, and put in a lot
of effort to regain the ball when possession was given away. Only
occasionally did Southampton threaten on the break, and while the game
remained scoreless, there was always an outside chance of a surprise
Southampton win. However, with Southampton reduced to 10 players owing to
injury, Fleet maintained pressure right until the end of the game, and soon
after another "disallowed" goal, they were finally rewarded with a well
taken winner in the last five minutes. This was an excellent win, and with a
little bit of luck, it could have been a far more comfortable victory. There
is still room for improvement in certain areas of play, but generally Fleet
are now playing some very good hockey, and should look forward to the
remainder of the season with confidence.

Ladies 2nd XI (2) vs. Basingstoke 5th XI (0)
Fleet 2nds played at home against Basingstoke. In the first half, the team were not letting the
ball do the work but battling up the pitch continually taking the defence head on. As a result the
result was 1-0 at half time but could have been a lot higher; our goal scorer was Sara Giles.
In the second half, we played more like a team with the ball being distributed better.
All credit to Basingstoke’s goalie who managed to keep out at least 4 goals but conceding
another from Sara Giles leaving the final score at 2-0. The second half was cut short with
Michelle Turner diving for the ball in the penalty area and having to be taken off the pitch in
an ambulance. Michelle had broken her collar bone and will not be playing for 6 weeks.

6 Nov 04
Fleet Mens 1st XI  (3) vs. Petersfield 1st XI (2)
A well thought game saw Fleet get another win under there belts. Fleet had to keep
a Petersfield side at bay, but go defending and taking of chances was another to make
sure Petersfield did not get the upper hand.

Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (2) vs. Southampton 4th XI (2)
Fleet lost their 100% record but remain undefeated after a hard fought performance that was in many parts below par for the team.

Missing several regulars from both midfield and upfront Fleet were always on the back foot on a slow pitch and went behind to a short corner where a defensive mix up allowed Southampton an easy goal.

Fleet slowly clawed themselves into the game with some neat attacking play and Potter equalised via a short corner to take the game to half time equal.

Again frailties at short corners were exposed for the second Southampton goal and once again Potter stepped up to the mark to bring Fleet level.

A rousing final 10 minutes saw Fleet create several chances but did not deserve to win and were justly held to a 2:2 draw

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (5) vs. M'mersh & Timsbury 2nd XI (4)
Fleet 3rd’s secured another vital home win to keep up the pressure on Bournemouth in a scrappy but entertaining game. 2 goals from Martin Camp and one apiece from Kenny Marsden, Rob Scott and Nick Williams saw Fleet home in at the end, but it should have been by a much more comfortable margin. Fleet had the better of the first half but failed to capitalise on their chances. Fareham began the second half much sharper and dominated much of the half but failed to take their opportunities, most notable from a plethora of short corners. Fleet eventually woke up and some good passing movement saw them score two late goals. On balance Fleet deserved the win, and some of the passing and play showed the potential within the side, but greater consistency will be needed as the season wears on if they are to be serious challengers for the title.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (5) vs. Petersfield 1st XI (0)
Fleet ladies travelled away to play a strong Petersfield team on Saturday, and put in their best performance of the season so far.

The opening exchanges were fairly even – but gradually Fleet took a grip on the game, with some excellent phases of passing play.
Fleet converted three times before the half time break – and looked well in control of the game, although Petersfield always looked dangerous on the break.

Following the interval, both sides upped their effort with a string of robust challenges being made by both sides – but eventually Fleet scored 2 more well taken goals to wrap up a very good and entertaining game. Despite the hard-fought game both sides displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout. If Fleet can build on this exceptionally encouraging performance, they can look
forward to rest of the season with great confidence.

Ladies 2nd XI (10) vs. Alton (0)
An away game against Alton, fielding a team short of a player proved to be another comfortable win by Fleet. The forwards moved the ball around with skill and ease, whilst the defence were keen to get in to the game by continually pushing up to support them. The end result was 10-1 with the opposition’s captain ending up having surgery to a smashed finger which was subject to a blow from a stick in their D in the last 10 minutes of the game.

30 Oct 2004
Fleet Mens 1st XI  (3) vs. Petersfield 1st XI (1)

Fleet bounced back after there previous local derby loss, to take the points which moved them up the table to fifth.

Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (5) vs. Basingstoke 3rd XI (2)

Fleet overcame a very spirited Basingstoke side thanks to the old heads on wise shoulders in the forward line.

Fleet began the game with Meakin in gaol as Carter had an embarrassing lapse of memory in the protection region, and were fired up to the point that the opposition did not get into the Fleet half.

Slick passing and support play enabled Fleet to win short corners abounding and despatched one with a measure of efficiency not yet seen by Fleet.

Once the substitution had been made and Carter, fully protected made his bow, Fleet relaxed and Basingstoke came back forcing Carter to make an excellent save.

Further goals for Gibson and Madge made the score 3-0 at halftime.
The fitness of ‘stoke told in the second half and Fleet had to defend resolutely, but conceded a goal quickly.
A Fluke goal from Madge in which the ball was kicked into his goal by the keeper made it 4-1, but there was no question on the fifth, a quick 16 from Dow to Edmonds to Viney to Lucas to Gasser to Madge…5-1 a training ground goal!

Basingstoke got a second via a contested short corner but it did not detract from the best performance of the season for the boys in black

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (3) vs. M'mersh & Timsbury 2nd XI (3)

A well matched game, between the teenage  of M&T and the senile experience
of Fleet.

First blood went to Martin Camp who kindly declined to whack the ball at the
diminutive keeper, but expertly put the ball past him. M&T replied and then
Ollie Edwards put Fleet ahead again.

The game stayed equally matched as each side scored again, with Nick Smith
opening his score sheet for Fleet.

The last minutes saw M&T equalize from a penalty corner and despite an immediate
response at the other end, Fleet failed to grasp the victory that they only just deserved.

Fleet Mens 1st XI  (5) vs. Weymouth 1st XI (1)

A long journey up to fleet for the Weymouth, and that was just for starters.
The opening game of the season saw a very open first half with both teams having missed chances,
but it was Fleet that took the lead through Alban DeSouza, which was shortly followed up by a second from Richard Eggleshaw, both from set pieces. Just before half time, Weymouth pulled one back.
The second half saw another bright start from Fleet, which led to Fleets third and Rich Eggleshaws second. Fleets fourth came from Fleets first short Corner of the game. Matt Desouza hit the post, but John Pearl was there to Slot home from inches. The Final goal came from the best move of the game, a first time strike came from Matt D, only to see it rebound off the goalkeepers shoulder, Alban followed in to calmly slot home.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (1) vs. Yateley Ladies 1st XI (4)
Fleet ladies team travelled away to meet Yateley on a day of sunshine and heavy showers. Following the previous week’s excellent performance; a 6-0 victory against Aldershot & Farnham, hopes were high of another good result. However, it soon became evident that they were in for a very tough game. Yateley playing with excellent high-tempo movement and passing dominated much of the first half. Fleet did threaten occasionally on the break, but it was no surprise when Yateley broke the deadlock after 20 minutes. Fleet raised their game as half time approached, and also at the beginning of the second half, however, ten minutes into the half, Yateley went further ahead with a well worked goal. Soon afterwards, Fleet pulled a goal back from a deflected short corner strike. As Fleet tried to push for an equaliser, Yateley made the game safe with two quick well worked goals. This was a disappointing performance by Fleet, but overall there can be no complaints about the result on the day, against a well drilled and highly motivated Yateley team.

Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (8) vs. Gosport 2nd XI (0)
A new look Fleet, excellently marshalled by the administrative qualities of their non-playing Captain P.Gibson (retd.) gave a commanding performance to begin the season with a thorough trouncing of a youthful Gosport.

On Field Skipper Ferguson had little to do defensively as Fleet took control in the first half, with well-drilled moves swing play across the park in a pendulum like approach that had Gosport chasing shadows.

The half time score of 4:0 did not reflect the chances created and Hutson and Slack were guilty of leaving their shooting sticks at home!!!

The second half was a little scrappy as Fleet, let their discipline wander and started to dribble and run with the ball, much to the consternation of Ferguson.

An excellent spread of goals, Matt Viney 2 on his debut, Potter 2 Gasser 2 Slack 1 Hutson 1

However 4 more goals settled the result. One consolation for Gosport was the world class save made by their goalkeeper from a rapier like flick from Ferguson, however this was a solid result and leaves Gibson with a selection dilemma!!!

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (4) vs. Weymouth 3rd XI (2)
A much better game with everyone beginning to remember the basics, moving into positions to receive the ball and looking before passing – but still a long way to go. This was reflected in the result 4 – 2 in Fleet's favour. Goal scorers were Nick Williams, Rob Belsher, Kenny Marsden and James Maull. Jonathan Camp had a much improved game in goal with some excellent positioning whilst Jack Scott made a significant contribution at inside left. Man of the match was James Maull at right wing / right half through tireless chasing and tackling, which was justly rewarded by a goal.

25 Sep 2004
Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (1) vs. Bournemouth 5th XI (3)

Despite losing 1 – 3 to a very strong Bournemouth 5th XI, everyone played very well together as a team on their first outing. The first half was a little lacklustre with lack of match practice and ball control very much in evidence. The second half saw a small improvement with the ball doing more of the work. Rob Scott’s missed opportunities in the first half were bettered by Rob Belsher’s misses in the second! Mark Woolford was in fine form and scored Fleet’s solitarily goal. The youngsters – Jonathan Camp, Jack Scott, James Maull and Nick Smith, were not overawed and all played exceptionally well, especially Jonathan our goalkeeper who made several important saves. Okay – not the result that we wanted but a great platform on which to build. Well done everyone.

RESULTS FOR 2003 - 2004

Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (2) vs. US Portsmouth 2nd XI (1)

Fleet 2nd XI put together an admirable display of hockey against US
Portsmouth. Keeping the ball flowing and linking passes together they
mounted  attack upon attack. Although the success rate was not particularly
high it was  to their credit that they played in the opposition's half for
long periods of  the game and eventually reaped the benefits.
A soft goal from Mark Woolford got the ball rolling but US Portsmouth
responded and equalised from a short corner. Fleet rather lost their way in
the  second half but maintained the pressure and Geoff Slack was able to
score a  quick goal and ease the foot off the gas. Unfortunately the
opposition came back  and despite a string of short corners were unable to
make that decisive move to  level the match.
Fleet were happy with their 2-1 success.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (0) vs. Southampton Ladies 3rd XI (2)

Injury hit Fleet travelled to Southampton on Saturday for their last game of
the season. With a number of players already unavailable, the Fleet cause
was not helped when illness caused the late withdrawal of even more
players. This meant Fleet arrived in Southampton with only 9 players. So on
yet another wet and windy Saturday, Fleet started the game with a rearguard
defensive action. Despite being two players short, Fleet never looked in
any real danger of conceding a goal. After 20 minutes, an emergency reserve
for Fleet arrived (diverted from a trip to Swansea), and the extra player
immediately gave Fleet more options. Despite still only having 10 players,
Fleet started applying pressure to the Southampton defence, and it was
something of a surprise when Southampton took the lead just before half
time from a breakaway.

The second half saw an excellent display from Fleet, with more or less one
way traffic as Fleet piled on the pressure. Despite numerous chances to
draw level, the game was finally settled minutes from the end when a
defensive error let Southampton score an unlikely second goal.

It brought to a close a very inconsistent season from Fleet where
performances ranged from the excellent to extremely poor. It is hard to
tell why a side that can beat the top team in the league one week loses
against a team near the bottom of the league the following week. Next
season, one of the keys to a successful season is to try to improve the
consistency of performance.

Fleet Mens 1st XI  (2) vs. Portsmouth & Southsea 1st XI (1)

With players missing from the main squad, call ups for Gary Ferguson and
Geoff Slack gave them a
chance to push for there positions. The game was hard fought from the
beginning, with both sides
putting pressure on the umpires.

Fleet's pressure on the pitch was rewarded, with a goal from a good worked
short corner, scored
by John Pearl. The pressure was carried on through the first half and was
finally reward with a penalty
flick that was converted by Matthew DeSouza.

The second half saw Portsmouth & Southsea come out with great want and this
was reward by a goal.
Fleet could have come away with a hatful, but for a great performance by
Portsmouth & Southsea's
goalkeeper.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (0) vs. Andover 1st XI (2)

Fleet ladies move up the table was halted this week by two goals that went
against play. After
the week before good scoring the goal could not be found and this resulted
in Fleet losing out
to a game that should have seem them going forward in the table.

Fleet Ladies 2nd XI  (0) vs. Alton (1)

With a strong side, Fleet looked to get the points from this game to keep
them in contention in the league.
And with 85% of the game they should have got the result.

But with a mixture of forwards wanting to score solo goals and letting Alton
build in confidence the tide
turned in the second half with a goal against play.

Fleet ladies 2nd XI only have 3 games to go to the end of the season and
need to keep there cool to finish
high in their league.
Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (4) vs. Petersfield 1st XI (3)

Following a two week break from league action, Fleet Ladies made the trip
down to Liphook on a bitterly cold morning to take on league leaders
Petersfield. In a fast and frenetic opening spell, Petersfield took the
lead within minutes of the start, but Fleet hit back quickly with a team
effort ending with a great individual goal from Karen Ferguson(Vids). The
high tempo of the game continued, and soon after, Vids converted another
well worked goal. Petersfield equalised with a move instigated from their
highly influential centre half, Another 10 minutes later saw Marie put
Fleet ahead again with yet another well worked goal. An action packed first
half was rounded off with Vids scoring yet another excellent goal, this
time high into the net.

Inevitably the pace of the game slowed a little in the second half, with
both sides matching each other for effort. Despite Fleet shackling the
excellent Petersfield centre half well for most of the half, Petersfield
still forced several short corners which they failed to convert owing to
some excellent defensive work. Eventually a poor defensive pass led to a
breakaway where the Petersfield centre half finally got some space and
scored a superb individual goal to make it 4-3. In a nervy final 10 minutes
Fleets defended well, holding out to claim an excellent result.

Overall this was an excellent performance from Fleet, and hopefully they
will take this form with them into the remaining 3 games of the season.
Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (3) vs. Aldershot & Farnham 2nd XI (0)

Following the previous weeks 3-1 victory, Fleet Ladies made the short
journey to take on Aldershot & Farnham, looking to continue their winning
form. The game started with Fleet a player short, but it didn't show, as
they soon got the better of the opening exchanges. In what was a well
contested game, Fleet maintained a tight grip on the game with Aldershot &
Farnham making only a few dangerous looking breaks. With still only 10
players on the pitch, Bernice Monchar scored the first Fleet goal after 25
minutes and soon afterwards, Fleet were finally up to full strength.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Fleet maintaining overall
control of the game, but with Aldershot & Farnham looking dangerous in
patches. Midway through the half Bernice again added to her tally, to
extend Fleets lead, and this was soon followed by a goal from Marie
Ballard, who also hit the post.

In what was a very entertaining game, Fleet came out comfortable winners in
the end, and will be looking to extend their winning form in their upcoming
 matches.
Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (1) vs. Gregarians 1st XI (3)

Following their recent encouraging performances, Fleet Ladies took on
bottom of the table Gregarians looking for a good win.
In the opening exchanges, Fleet were quickly forced onto the back foot
conceding a couple of short corners, which were well cleared. Gradually
Fleet came back into the game and as the game flowed from end to end, Fleet
started to take control, laying siege to the Gregarians goal. Eventually
Fleet took the lead following a very direct attack, with a 16 hit out being
picked up on the half-way line by Caroline Brown (Kaz), who took the ball
all the way into the D to score a well taken goal. Fleet looked to be
taking control of the game when a bad mix-up in defence conceded
possession, leading to the Gregarians equaliser.
The second half saw a very below par performance from Fleet, who just
couldn't get their game going following some positional changes. The game
looked to be heading for a scrappy draw, when Gregarians managed to convert
two late goals to take the points.
Overall this was a very disappointing performance from Fleet, who will
hope to bounce back to form in next weeks game against City of Portsmouth.
Fleet Mens 1st XI  (4) vs. Southampton 1st XI (1)

Fleet avenged the narrow defeat at the start of the season with a
comprehensive victory over a Southampton side that on the day were distinctly second best.
Fleet fresh from a 5:1 victory over Winchester 2XI played controlled hockey
in the first half, but Southampton had the better chances.
In a tight half the well-drilled short corner routine of Fleet saw Matt
deSousa despatch another goal to take the lead.
The parity was restored when Southampton finished a short corner well to
make it 1:1 at half time.
The second half belonged to Fleet with sweeping moves from one end to the
other forcing Southampton onto the back foot. One such move allowed
Alban DeSousa to increase the margin followed by several spurned chances,
but again the short corner routine enabled Matt to score his second and
Fleets third.
At this point Fleet gave away a penalty flick, which was expertly saved by
the Fleet Goalkeeper.
A fine move and individual skill from Fleets newest recruit Daryl saw his
maiden goal and ensured Fleet got off to an excellent New Year

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (0) vs. Havant Ladies 3rd XI (0)

Fleet Ladies 1st XI travelled down to the south coast to play Havant Ladies
on a sunny, but rather chilly day. The action was fast and frenetic in the
early encounters, but Fleet gradually took control of the game, and were
soon creating several clear cut chances. A mix of good defending and some
very near misses meant that the game was scoreless at half time. The second
half continued with Fleet in control and creating chance after chance. Even
when it looked like Fleet had taken the lead after some good work by  Man
of the Match, Marie Ballard, the umpire had whistled for an offence that
noone, including the opposiition, saw. In the closing 10 minutes, Havant
looked dangerous in the odd breakaway attack, but the Fleet defence held
firm.

This was the second drawn game in succession that Fleet should have won at
a canter, but with the encouraging performances in both matches, it's only
a matter of time before Fleet start hitting the winning trail again.

Fleet Ladies 2nd XI  (2) vs. West Meon Ladies (2)

Travelling to Portsmouth, the 2nd XI ladies started the second part of the
season, with a close fought match. After struggling to get a side out, the
mixture of youth and experience gelled well together.
But IBM Nomads push was to much and by half time Fleet where behind
by 2-1.
The second half saw greater pressure from Fleet which resulted in getting
the score back to 2 a piece, but a contested goal gave IBM Nomads the result.
This was not the start Fleet wanted. But the youth showed some good skills
and promise for the future.
Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (1) vs. Fareham 1st XI (1)

Fleet Ladies 1st XI welcomed in the New Year with an excellent performance
against top of the table Fareham. Despite a break from action of several
weeks over the Christmas holidays, Fleet played a well controlled game
throughout in what was a thoroughly entertaining match. With Fleet
controlling much of the game, is was something of a surprise for them to go
behind midway through the first half, however a well struck goal from Karen
Ferguson soon afterwards levelled the scores. Fleet created many chances and
numerous short corners, and only some last gasp defending prevented Fleet
scoring several more goals. Skipper Sarah Frye had an outstanding game in
defence and thoroughly deserved her Man of the Match.
This was by far Fleets best performance of the season to date, and they can
only be disappointed that they didn't come away without a convincing win.
If Fleet can maintain this level of performance through the rest of the
season, things look very bright for the team.

Fleet Ladies 2nd XI  (2) vs. IBM Nomads (3)

Fleet Mens 1st XI  (3) vs. Andover 1st XI (2)

Fleet went into Xmas full of spirit but nearly gave away the presents by allowing Andover into the game twice.
Fleet began the better and played impressive flowing hockey, at the hub of
which was the livewire Richard Meakin, obviously had an early night!!!.
A well-placed pass from Sands allowed Richard to run onto it and with Henry
like pace beat three players to finish off in style 1-0
Slack defending and rash tackling gave a short corner, which led to the
equaliser.
However another touch of sheer pace allowed Richard Meakin to Score a second
well-taken goal and when Matt DeSousa clinically finished a short corner off
the writing was on the wall.
However a typical Fleet crumble pre Xmas nerves led to the score being
pegged to 3-2 when the final whistle went ho hoh hoh!!!
Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (1) vs. Southampton 3rd XI (1)

Fleet Ladies 1st XI entertained Southampton 3rd XI on a cold overcast day.
The first half began as a quite even affair, with both sides playing some
enterprising hockey. Midway through the half, skipper Sarah Frye scored her
first goal of the season from a short corner to nudge Fleet ahead.
Following the goal, Fleet seemed to gain the better of the play but both
sides continued to create good chances. The game resumed in a similar
manner into the second half with fleet looking to be in control, but unable
to apply the killer touch to make the game safe. With less than 10 minutes
remaining, the ball rolled across the Fleet D, and a well struck shot
pulled Southampton level. Fleet piled on the pressure to try to regain the
lead, but before they could, the final whistle sounded to end a game that
Fleet really should have won.
Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (4) vs. Romsey 1st XI (1)

Fleet Ladies 1st XI travelled down to Romsey on another wet and windy
Saturday looking to build on their previous weeks win.
The first half began in encouraging form, with Fleet moving the ball
around
quite well. Eventually the pressure had to tell, and after 20 minutes,
Marie Ballard converted from close range and then followed up again with a
second 5 minutes later in a man-of-the match performance. Shortly
afterwards, Vids Ferguson scored high into the net to make it 3-0 at the
interval.
Romsey started the second half in a much more determined fashion, putting
pressure on the Fleet defence, and putting them off their passing game.
Romsey pulled a goal back after 5 minutes with a well struck shot from the
top of the D, and the match looked a far more even affair than the 1st
half
had suggested. For 20 minutes Fleet struggled to get hold of any
meaningful
possession, with the Fleet defence having to work overtime with Sarah's
Frye and Giles outstanding. Finally Fleet started getting hold of the ball
again and in the last 10 minutes forced a Penalty Stroke, which was coolly
converted by Mary King to make it 4-1. Following that ? Fleet controlled
the remainder of the game, to make it 2 wins on the trot.
Fleet Mens 1st XI  (0) vs. Portsmouth & Southsea 1st XI (2)

In appalling conditions Fleet succumbed to a distinctly average Portsmouth
and Southsea side by making far too many basic errors.

Fleet slightly unnerved by the umpire's insistence in playing in blue began
shakily with Fleets goalkeeper making several key saves.

However a foray into the Fleet dee left a Portsmouth player upended and the
umpire signalling for a flick, which was duly saved.

Fleet went behind to a wicked deflection from a short corner but had plenty
of chances to equalise as they gradually took control.

Fleet however were making basic errors and all to often these resulted in
pressure on the Fleet goal and eventually when a Portsmouth player was
allowed too much space he rifled in a shot from the top of the dee to make
the score 2:0

It was an abrupt end to a good run on a torrid wintry day.

Fleet Mens 2nd XI  (0) vs. Andover 2nd XI (7)

Fleet 2nd XI new they had a tough fight on their hands when they went to
meet top of the league Andover. With only 3 goals against them this season
it was more a question of damage limitation than anything else.
Fleet started off a bit slowly and gave away a series of short corners and
Andover were soon 4 goals ahead. all from set pieces. They got one more goal
in the first half which was a well struck ball into the top of the goal.
The second Half Fleet settled down to their task and although they had a few
attempts at the Andover goal they were never close to scoring. more
importantly however they managed to hold their defence firm and denied
Andover the advantage and apart from 2 late errors were to be congratulated
on a brave and sterling performance form which they came out worthy
opponents.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (1) vs. Andover 1st XI (0)

Travelling down to Andover meant that Fleet Ladies 1st XI missed Johnny
Wilkinson kicking England to World Cup immortality, and the dirty day of
incessant rain didn't help the mood either.
So, as the game against Andover began, there was no telling how Fleet
would play. The first 10 minutes looked ominous for Fleet, as they hardly
got a meaningful touch of the ball, with Andover applying tremendous
pressure, and forcing several short corners.
Luckily for Fleet, Andover couldn't get anything past "man-of-the-match"
Sarah Giles in goal. Fleet gradually raised their game by getting their
passing game going, and keeping possession of the ball for much longer
periods of the game.
Just before the interval, Fleet finally converted pressure into a goal,
as Karen Ferguson converted a well worked short corner.
The second half was a much more even affair, with both sides pushing for
a goal. Each side had good chances to score, but Fleet held on
to their 1-0 lead, to record a well deserved, hard fought win.
At the end of the day, November 22nd 2003 will be remembered far more for
Johnny's kicking in Australia than Fleets trip to Andover.

Fleet Ladies 2nd XI  (2) vs. Alton 2nd XI (0)

Fleet Ladies 2nd XI carried on there good start to the season with another
good win. The weather
did not help the game with worst day for cold and rain.

The first half saw Fleet struggle to convert there pressure, but against an
Alton side that started
with only ten players, Fleet deserved to go into the half time one up.

Alton boosted by there extra player in the second half, put pressure on
Fleets keeper and defence.
But the pressure was keep at bay and Fleet fought back to get a second.

This win keeps them second in the table, with there next match at
Petersfield, this weekend.
Fleet Mens 1st XI  (5) vs Blandford Mens 1st XI (3)

Fleet completed their first win of the season in emphatic style with a
resounding win over their Dorset rivals Blandford.

Fleet as usual began slowly and conceded an early goal. But worse was to
follow as unluckily a deflected short corner of new goalkeeper Tony Conetta
looped into the roof of the net and made the score 0:2.

Fleet pulled a goal quickly back through Phil Houston before half time. The
second half began with Dave Smith making yet another mark in his first
season with Fleet.

Fleet looked solid at the back and had numerous opportunities to take the
lead before; in an unexpected short corner move new boy Chris Fryatt slotted
a well-struck goal to take the lead 3:2

From then on Fleet looked in complete control and a beautifully crafted and
quick move from defence to attack saw Richard Meakin finish impressively.

Fleet lapsed for a minute to allow Blandford back in before normal service
was resumed with Mark Sands putting the game beyond doubt with a fifth goal.

Have Fleet turned the corner? Watch and see!!!!

FLEET Ladies 1st XI (0) vs. Petersfield 1st XI (3)
Fleet Ladies 1st XI were looking to bounce back to form after some recent
poor results, and in a close fought 1st half produced a much improved
performance.

However, just before half time, a twice taken short corner from Petersfield
resulted in the 1st goal of the game. Then, within 10 minutes of the start
of the second half, Fleet faced an uphill task after conceding two more
goals in quick succession, firstly from a short corner, and then from a
penalty stroke.
Fleet dug in and continued to make a game of it, creating several chances
to get back into the match, but ultimately a mix of poor finishing and good
defensive work by Petersfield kept them at bay.
Despite the disappointing final score line which didn't truly reflect a
quite
evenly matched game, Fleet did put in a much improved performance which
they can hopefully build on in the forthcoming games.
FLEET Ladies 1st XI (0) vs. Aldershot & Farham 2nd XI (2)

Fleet Ladies 1st XI finally returned to action against Aldershot & Farnham
Ladies 2nd XI in a local derby match.
With a chilly wind blowing across the pitch, the first half
started in a very scrappy manner, with both teams matching each others
efforts. Fleet struggled to get their game going after the 2 week
break from match action, which certainly showed in their lack of sharpness.
The
game continued to be very tight affair with both sides struggling to impose
their play until Aldershot & Farnham produced the first decent move of the
match witch led to a well worked goal just before half time.

The second half started badly for Fleet when defensive errors presented an
easy 2nd goal for Aldershot & Farnham. This raised the Aldershot & Farnham
belief, and as Fleet seemed to run out of steam, Aldershot & Farnham
imposed themselves on the game a lot more, and they started creating
several good chances from which they could have easily extended their lead.
Fleet did create a few chances to get back into the game late on but failed
to capitalise.
FLEET Men's 1st XI (5) vs. Yateley 1st XI (6)

Fleet nearly achieved the comeback of the season, however it was not to be
as time eluded them when they had the full upper hand.

As is the norm this season Fleet began slowly, falling 3-0 behind before a
well-taken goal from Richard Meakin reduced the deficit.

Sloppy play allowed Yateley to extend the lead to 4-1 at half time.

Again in the second half Fleet turned the game around extending pressure
onto the Yateley defence.

Matt DeSouza from a well-worked short corner reduced the deficit, but again
Yateley extended their lead following some errors from Fleet.

Alban DeSouza made it 5-3 but again Yateley scored, before a frantic last 10
mins which saw Matt DeSouza score from another short corner and with 10
seconds left Fleet were awarded a P.flick. This was duly despatched by Matt
DeSouza for a well-deserved hat trick but it was in vain - Fleets gloomy
start to the season continues

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (3) vs. City of Portsmouth 6th XI (8)

Fleet travelled down to Portsmouth with only ten players, of these ten,
there were three ladies and three colts. The match started with constant
pressure from both sides for the whole of the first half with goals scored
for Fleet by Rob Belsher and Karen Ferguson and two by City of Portsmouth.

When the second half started the score's was level for about 10 minutes and
then Christopher Edmonds for Fleet scored. It looked as though Fleet would
hang on to win, but then the centre forward of the opposition scored four
quick goals plus a two more from other players, with Karen Ferguson getting
her second for Fleet making the final score 8-4 to City of Portsmouth.
FLEET Ladies 1st XI (0) vs. City of Portsmouth Ladies 2nd XI (1)

On another beautiful sunny day, Fleet Ladies 1st XI
travelled to Whale Island in Portsmouth to face the City of Portsmouth 2
nd XI. Following 2 recent victories, hopes were high in the Fleet camp,
but as the game unfolded, Fleet failed to get their passing game going.
This led to a very scrappy encounter, with the ball bypassing the
midfield for most of the match. Fleet looked to be edging the game in
terms of possession and chances, but at half time, both teams remained
scoreless.

The second half continued in the same scrappy manner, and with a 0-0 result
looking the likely outcome, Fleet somehow contrived to concede a very
sloppy goal midway through the half. Despite applying pressure for the rest
of the match, and having several chances, an equaliser never came, with
City of Portsmouth coming out 1-0 winners.

This was a very disappointing performance and result for Fleet, who now
have 2 weeks away from league action.

FLEET Mens 1st XI (3) vs. Salisbury 1st XI (3)

Salisbury came to Fleet as league leaders but went a way thankful for a point after
a spirited if somewhat fluctuating performance from Fleet.
Fleet stretched by work commitments were thankful to have 11 players at the beginning
of the match and started effectively moving the ball around and penetrating Salisbury
with ease.
A slick short corner - almost a trademark now, saw John Pearl score yet
another goal, however sloppy defending let Salisbury backs into the game to be 1-1 at
Half time.

The second half continued in the same vain with Fleet looking by far the
sharper team
and missing several gilt edged chances. Goals again from well worked short
corners from
Alban and Matt DeSouza saw Fleet ease into a 3-1 lead and a true reflection
of the game.
However all Fleet's old insecurities emerged and they began to defend deep,
and were
punished from a short corner unluckily deflected in by Dan Britton.
Salisbury upped the pressure, Fleet defended deeper still and ultimately a
combination of
good hockey and woeful marking led to Salisbury equalising with a minute to
go.

Excellent in places work to be done but Fleet have climbed above Yateley in
the table and
begun to put points on the board

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (3) vs. Isle of Wight 2nd XI (2)

A mixed side of veterans and youth playing together for the first time this
season as Fleet 3rd XI,
managed to secure a 3 - 2 win over an energetic Isle of Wright team. The
game was played in
good spirits with plenty of excitement at both ends of the pitch. Jo Edmonds
opened the scoring
from a short corner, which was responded by Isle of Wight quite soon after.
Fleet then responded
from open play, with a good pass from Jonathan Camp being converted by Rob
Belsher. But Fleet
went into half time 2-2.
Nick Smith had a very good game, with plenty of running and some strong
stick play. He was ably
supported by two other juniors, James Maull and Luke Palman. Luke Palman
scoring the winning
goal. The side also fielded two goalkeepers playing as attacking forwards,
one of whom was unable
to put the ball in the opposition goal. The player, who shall remain
nameless, was quoted as saying
' putting the ball in the net is against everything I have every learnt'.
FLEET Ladies 1st XI (4) vs. Gregarians Ladies 1st XI (3)

On beautiful sunny day that was more akin to summer than mid-October, Fleet
Ladies 1st XI travelled to Haselmere to face a Gregarians 1st XI.

The opening 10 minutes looked like Fleet had gone fora summer holiday too.
Gregarians forced several short corners in quick succession from the start
of the game, and only good defending kept the scores level.

Gradually Fleet started upping the tempo of the game, and forced Gregarians
onto the back foot. Forcing several short corners themselves, the
breakthrough
finally came for Fleet after 20 minutes, when Vids Ferguson converted from
close range following a melee on the goal-line. During the rest of the first
half, Fleet played some fine attacking hockey, but despite numerous scoring
chances, a mixture of poor finishing and fine defensive work kept the score
down to 1-0.
The pressure had to pay however, and eventually did with Lavs Lavery scoring
her first competitive goal for Fleet to make it 2-0. With Fleet in almost
total control of the game, Gregarians broke and scored against the run of
play from a short corner right on the interval whistle.

The 2nd half was a more even game, and with both teams creating chances.
Gregarians finally drew level after 10 minutes with a goal from open play,
and went into the lead soon afterwards for the first time in the game.
Momentum seemed to be with Gregarians, but Fleet dug deep, and started to
re-impose their passing game, and with 10 minutes to go, Vids Ferguson
scored a fine individual goal to again level the scores at 3-3. As Fleet
piled on the pressure, Vids Ferguson scored another fine solo goal to
eventually run out 4-3 winners.

For the scored week in succession, Fleet scored 4 goals, and Vids completed
a second memorable hat-trick.

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (3) vs. United Services (0)

On a surprisingly hot October afternoon a defensively strong Fleet team
lined up against newly promoted United Services at home.

Fleet were positive from the outset, maintaining possession and building a
series of promising attacks.  Despite the opposition's excellent goalkeeper
and their close marking Fleet's tenacity was rewarded with 2 goals from
Michelle Turner, in her first league game of the season.  Denise Barnes
slammed a third goal home from a short corner.

Fleet can take heart from a strong performance and particularly not
conceding any goals.  This was largely due to a strong midfield.

The end resulted in a well-deserved 3-0 victory putting Fleet top of the
division.  The challenge is to retain that position for the whole the
season.
FLEET Mens 1st XI (5) vs. Southampton 1st XI (6)

Fleet first XI got off to an exciting league campaign, delivering all the
thrills if not the correct result.
Following an excellent pre season, where Fleet were unbeaten, the boys
entered the historically
hard fought match with optimism and a few new faces.
However Soton scored from a short corner in the 2nd minute but not to be out
done however Fleet
had the lion's share of possession for 20 minutes and made this count with
a debut league goal
 from the sprightly Dave Smith.

Fleet continued to press and got their rewards when the were awarded a
flick.
Alban DeSouza however brought out a great save from the Soton goalie.

Sloppy defending condemned Fleet to a 3:1 halftime deficit. Two Scrappy
goals from Soton took
the score to 5:1 before Matt DeSouza pulled one back.
Another mishap defensively let Soton take a 6:2 lead before a goal of
individual skill from
Mark Sands brought Fleet to life.

For the last 15 mins it was one way as Fleet time and time again poured
forward sensing a famous draw!!
Two short corners John Pearl to Matt DeSouza back to John Pearl in the blink
of an eye brought Fleet to 6:5,
but Father time himself was against them and Soton held on.....just.

A lot to learn but a lot to take away well played the new boys.

FLEET Mens 2nd XI (5) vs. Alton 2nd XI (0)

This match augured well for Fleet as they have to meet Alton in the
league soon. Fleet started to play the way they need to make some
impact on their league and some good flowing hockey brought its rewards.

An early goal from Rob Scott's short corner got things moving and then
Gary Madge and John Haddock both made great individual goals to put
Fleet ahead.

Although the second half saw a slight deterioration in Fleet's play
they hung to their lead and despite several other good attempts only
managed a further two goals.

The result has raised the confidence of the team as they start the
league season next week.

FLEET Ladies 1st XI (4) vs. Havant 3rd XI (1)

Fleet Ladies 1st XI turned in a much improved performance from their
previous outing.
A determined approach from the start of the game saw the Fleet ladies
applying pressure in all areas of the field, which soon led to Kathy Taylor
opening the scoring from a short corner. Fleet kept possession quite well,
and whenever the ball was lost, applied good pressure to force Havant into
mistakes. Before half time some great work on the right lead to
Karen Ferguson to brake into the D to score Fleet's second.

The second half saw Havant up the tempo of their game putting Fleet on the
back foot, and this effort was rewarded with a well worked goal, pulling
the score back to 2-1. However, as play continued, Fleet dug in and
gradually restored their superiority, and this was rewarded with 2
spectacular goals high into the net from Karen Ferguson late in the game
to complete her tat-trick.

A much improved performance from Fleet resulted in a well deserved 4-1 win.

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (5) vs. West Meon (3)

Having lost to this side at the end of last season Fleet had it all to
prove.  From the outset Fleet attacked and created chances putting West
Meon on the back-foot and were eventually rewarded with an opening goal
from Marie Ballard. West Meon then equalized, with the score at
half-time, 1-1.

In the second half Fleet continued to play the better hockey, with Marie
Ballard completing a hat-trick and goals from Lindsay Smyth and Janine
King. Unfortunately, in the process of attack, Fleet conceded two weak
goals, but despite this recorded a convincing 5-3 away win and with only 10
players!

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (6) vs. IBM NOMADS (1)

Fleet dominated in the first half spurred on by an opportunistic early
opening goal from Lindsay Smyth.  Another goal soon followed from Lindsay
and 3 from Glynnis to put the score at 5-0 at the halfway mark.

IBM were dejected at half time and ready to throw in the towel.  However, in
the second half they returned with renewed energy and clawed back a goal.
The Fleet defence came under some short-lived pressure but responded
superbly and goalie, Emma, made a couple of excellent saves.

Fleet once again took control of the game with another goal from Lindsay.  A
few chances were created but bungled at the finish and so the score remained
6-1.

A special mention goes to newcomer, Nicki, who put her skills to great use
in defence.

RESULTS FOR 2002 - 2003

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (3)  vs. Sabah (2)

With most players having not played for some weeks, Fleet Threes were eager
to mount a goal feast against the bottom of the league side. This was easier
said than done, but Rob Belsher scored his 20th goal after Fleet missed
numerous chances and a penalty flick!

Two goals up by half time soon changed as Sabah brought on two strong
players and drew level, with six minutes left to play, after Dilip Shah
added Fleet's second. A text book four pass move from defence to wing to
centre half to centre forward sealed the winning goal by Gary Madge and to
steal the three points! Sabah's goalkeeper had a superb game with their
defence blocking numerous chances and riding their luck.

Fleet Mens 1st XI  (0)  vs.  Weymouth 1st XI  (2)

Fleet paid a heavy price for failure in front of goal with a home defeat
against the Division leaders, when they outplayed them for long periods of
the game.
On the new astro at the Army base in Aldershot Fleet started off well and
had the bulk of the possession until Weymouth who were relying on breakaway
tactics  scored from a cruelly deflected short corner that left Chris Carter
with no chance.
The second half proved even more frustrating as Fleet camped in the
opponents half only to fail with the final ball or see the Weymouth
goalkeeper make a string of good saves including a breathtaking effort to
stop Matt DeSouza.
Two yellow cards, one fully deserved for a bad tackle and one due to a
little over enthusiastic umpiring marred a, on the whole pleasing
performance up to the oppositions Dee....now Fleet need to finish what they
started

Fleet Mens 3rd XI  (5)  vs. Basingstoke Badgers  (3)

Having not played last week, Fleet Threes were eager to play and soon
settled down after some early pressure from Basingstoke. From a Fleet's free
hit, the ball deflecting off a defender's stick where Alan Dow followed in
to score his first goal. Basingstoke soon equalized and this pushed Fleet to
move up a gear. Two well-taken goals from Gary Madge and Rob Belsher gave a
comfortable half time lead. Gary Madge and Rob Belsher added to their
tallies in the second period with Basingstoke scoring twice, one literally
with the last shot of the game.

Fleet Ladies 1st XI  (0)  vs.  Havant 2 XI  (4)

Fleet ladies struggled to get a side out for this game, but where not going
to give a strong Havant side an easy
ride. Fleet started well with some good attacks, but the attacks did not
come to anything and Havant when they
got there attacks finished well, with the first two goals being helped in by
Fleets defence.

The second half saw Fleets lack of fitness allow Havant to look the better
side, but some good support from
the side line kept the sprits up and only down to some good defending by
Havant, Fleet did not come away
with a deserved goal. Havant finished two further goals to take a well
fought game.

Fleet Ladies 2nd XI  (0)  vs.  Havant 4 XI  (6)

On a cold windy pitch in Portsmouth, Fleet ladies decide before the game
that the opposition where better than
them, so they were not going to win and by half time they where three down
to some good passing and finishing.

The second half did see some better play from Fleet, but Havant carried on
from the first half with some good team
play and got a further 3 goals, which gave Fleet some cheer as the home game
had been a 8 - 1 loss.

Fleet 1st XI  (2)  vs.  Petersfield 1st XI  (1)

Fleet worked very hard to throw this game a way against a young spirited
Petersfield side, only to emerge triumphant and very relieved.
Petersfield took to the park with only 10 players however the blend of
Hampshire youth players and one or two old heads meant that they caused
Fleet some problems with their running and enthusiasm.
Again it was down to Matt DeSouza the Fleet Skipper to despatch a short
corner to earn the lead.
This should have been doubled when a stampeding run from Jeff Slack resulted
in a P.Flick, which Matt struck against the bar.
In the second half again Fleet under performed but went further ahead with
their best passing move of the game.
Another missed DeSouza flick and a goal from a Petersfield short corner
ensured an edgy 10 mins at the end of the game, but Fleet created enough
chances to have register double figures, only it wasn't their day.

Fleet 3rd XI  (1)  vs. Woking 6th XI  (1)

Woking put out a strong side, to ensure they did not suffer a second defeat
to Fleet. This tactic worked as Fleet was unable to control the midfield and
supply the forwards with some quality passes. 0 - 0 at half time.
Woking went ahead from a short corner in the 24th minute of the second half,
but Fleet responded by equalizing via a well-taken short corner from Rob
Belsher in the 25th minute. A rare event for the threes to score from a
short corner!

Fleet 1st XI  (7)  vs.  Yateley 1st XI  (2)

This eagerly awaited local derby proved to be a mismatch as Fleet destroyed
Yateley primarily from clever set pieces.

Fleet began the game very strongly and were 2-0 up through a deflection from
Richard Meakin and a short corner from Matt DeSouza.

However Yateley quickly pulled a goal back, before a clever and quick break
up the right allowed Alban DeSouza to extend the lead again. Before half
time slack marking allowed Yateley to put another past Fleet's goalkeeper.
3-2 at half time.

However the team talk obviously did the trick for Fleet as they romped away
in the second half with Richard Eggleshaw having a field day up front
causing all manner of problems.

Two drag flicked short corners ensured a Matt DeSouza hat trick and two
well-taken goals again from set pieces kept Richard Eggleshaw's rich vein of
form going.

In the end Yateley looked dispirited and the magnitude to which Fleet had
done a fine defending job was illustrated by the frustrated substitution of
Yateley centre forward Paul Rolfe 10 mins from time.

Fleet purred and all over the park evidence of a job well done was shown on
the smiling faces of the victors in this the heaviest local derby defeat for
many a year.

Fleet 2nd XI  (3)  vs. Yateley 2nd XI  (4)

Fleet 2nd XI have been floundering over the last few weeks, but this week
saw them pick up their trailing bootlaces, tighten their belts and once more
they started to look like the team they were. This was in part due to
finally playing people in the right position and the addition of newcomer
Mark Saddler.
Although Yateley took the lead Fleet replied and although they never had the
upper hand started to take the game to their opposition.
Goals came form Mark Saddler, Rob Scott and John Haddock. It was 3 goals a
piece until the dying minutes of the game, Fleet skipper Mike Meakin had a
rare slip and scored the final goal for Yateley. Fleet felt they had played
decently and were much happier with both the result and their sporting
prowess.
Fleet 3rd XI  (2)  vs. Hamble Old Boys 3rd XI (1)

Hamble suffered their first league defeat in an inspired game. After 10
minutes, Hamble knew that this was going to be a tough, competitive game.
After even exchange of play in the first half, Hamble went ahead just after
the break. Fleet did not panic, remained composed and a few minutes later,
Paul Marshall slotted home from close range to equalise. Although Hamble had
their fair share of penalty corners, it was three outstanding passes from
Mark Sadler, to Mark Woolford to Rob Belsher, who scored, in as many seconds
to seal a superb win. Defence held strong until the final whistle when the
whole team celebrated this most satisfying of wins.

 Fleet 1st XI  (4)  vs.  Salisbury 1st XI  (0)

Fleet continued their excellent start to the New Year with a fine victory
 over Salisbury in sleepy Wiltshire.

Fleet still missing influential centre half Sands began on the back foot
as the speed of the Salisbury forwards surprised the defence. However
speed was their only asset as they created very little real chances and
gradually Fleet with incisive passing began to wear them down.

A period of sustained pressure saw Alban DeSouza score from a short
corner. And following another well-worked passing move Richard Eggleshaw
scored a screamer with a reverse strike that left the keeper clutching
 thin air.

Excellent passing in the second half saw a rampant Eggleshaw score his
second and fifth in two games.

Another well worked short corner resulted in Matt DeSouza beating the
keeper all ends up only to see his shot hit the post, but Richard Meakin
was on hand for a simple tap in to make it 4-0 and very comfortable it
 was.

Fleet 1st XI  (7)  vs.  Blandford 1st XI  (3)

Fleet finally found their goal scoring touch, with a fine display of
attacking play, against a full strength Blandford side battling to avoid
the drop.
Fleet had a game plan of man marking and a more attacking set up and it
worked. A fine short corner by DeSouza was followed up with a well-taken
 Eggleshaw goal.
However their defensive weakness was shown when the Fleet team conceded
two weak short corners to equalise.
Another Eggleshaw goal well taken from a short corner and a Richard Meakin
solo effort stretched the lead to 4-2. But again Fleet got the wobbles and
Blandford pulled one back to make it 4-3.
Fortunately Fleet regained their composure to stretch their lead with
goals from Alban DeSouza, Matt DeSouza and Eggleshaw completing a fine hat
trick ensured that the points went to the better side.

 Fleet 2nd XI  (1)  vs. Wimborne 2nd XI  (3)

Fleet 2nd XI started off strongly and were soon rewarded by a goal scored by
Andrew Parker. Wimborne however applied themselves and crept back into the
 game.
Fleet lost shape in the second half and with the sun in their eyes,
conceded a further two goals. They never looked like replying with any
sincerity and their passing and attacking abilities looked distinctly
 average.

 Fleet 3rd XI  (2)  vs. Woking 6th XI  (0)

This rearranged fixture was well fought as Fleet's attack started to take
advantage of a poor Woking defence. Sean Cannon opened his account and
from that point, it did not look like Fleet would lose. An extra goal
would help matters and this came from a short corner by Gary Madge, who
has been unavailable for a number of weeks and was slightly "rusty," as a
 reward for all his efforts.

The defence had a solid game and this meant that Goalkeeper Rupert Pim,
kept yet another clean sheet and this is Fleet's eighth win in nine games.

Young 12 year old Jonathan Camp, had his best game yet. He got into some
good positions and laid the ball off well. This fixture did not overwhelm
 him and his progress continues!

RESULTS FOR 2001 - 2002

WEEK ENDING 3 MAR 2002

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (5) vs. PETERSFIELD 2nd XI (2)

New player Mike Wigley, opened his account for Fleet from a well taken penalty corner.
This was followed soon after with a goal from Adrian Thorndyke, the first of his two goals. Which saw
Fleet go in three up at half time.
Petersfield had a young forward line, but made few serious attempts on goal until the second half.
Fleet added to their lead with  two goals from Rob Belsher.  Quick, decisive passing from the halves
was the key to this success, which they will need, when Fleet play top of the league Bordon next week.

WEEK ENDING 24 FEB 2002

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (3) vs. HASELMERE 5th XI (0)

Fleet travelled to Haselmere with sleep still in their eyes, for an early start.
But Fleet started well with an early goal resulting from a good pass from
Rob Belsher, which was converted by Martin Camp. The game continued
to go Fleet's way, but even with some good passing moves, they where
unable to convert any of theses moves.

The second half saw Fleet reduced to 10 players, but this did not stop them
playing the better hockey and Fleets second came from a reverse of the
first goal, with Rob Belsher converting a pass from Martin Camp.
Some good play from Philip Hutson and Dilip Shah was rewarded with a goal
for Dilip Shah, which gave Fleet a good result from a good all round team
effort.

FLEET Ladies 1st XI (2) vs. SOUTHAMPTON 2nd XI (1)

Fleet started positively, moving the ball around the back and building a
series of promising attacks early on.  Their hard work and determination
were rewarded a few minutes before half time when J.King capitalised upon a
quick ball into the oppositions D.
Southampton upped the pace for the beginning of the second half and, despite
strong marking by the Fleet defence, managed to equalise.
Undeterred Fleet continued to move the ball well and, with ten minutes to
go, M.Ballard scored a classic goal backed by a great team effort.
With the final whistle about to blow a dubious penalty flick was awarded
against the home side.  But it was not to be Southampton's day as S.Giles
saved their flick securing a well deserved victory for Fleet.

WEEK ENDING 17 FEB 2002

FLEET Mens 2nd XI (0) vs. SALISBURY 2nd XI (10)

With only a 8 man side, due to school holidays, Fleet defended well in the
first half, with good
leadership from Paul Gibson. But even with the great defending of Martin
Camp and Jimmy
Barmwell, Fleet went in at Half time two goals down.

The second half saw Salisbury wake up to the fact that they had 3 extra
players and with Fleet
losing heart, James Parker gallantly tried his hardest to keep them out, but
to no avail. Allowing
Salisbury to get an easy victory.

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (4) vs. BASINGSTOKE BADGERS XI (3)

A combination of unavailability and players released to the second eleven
resulted in a much changed side. Fleet started well but conceded an early
goal against a Basingstoke side full of young players. This goal spurred
Fleet to achieve a superb passing game and went three one up by half time.
Goals were from Jon Donkin, Dilip Shah and a wicked flick from Alan Dow.

Basingstoke, rattled by the halftime score, came back in to the game
strongly and scored two quick goals, with Darryl Cook, Fleet's keeper, being
kept rather busy. Fleet's play reverted to long, hopeful passing which saw
Rob Belsher score a fine goal. A missed penalty stroke by Basingstoke meant
that lady luck was shining down on Fleet.

WEEK ENDING 2 FEB 2002

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (0) vs. WOKING 6th XI (2)

Woking adopted a close man to man marking system for this match and it paid
off handsomely. Fleet were unable to overcome this with service to the

the second half, but Woking's defence held firm. Disappointing result as we

But Yateley where not going to allow this and with a few minutes left stole

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (3) vs. ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 3rd XI (2)

Steve Isaacs continued his goal scoring run with two more goals with Rob
Belsher adding to his tally in this rain soaked match. First half was an
even game with Fleet scoring once with both sides not able to play fluent
hockey. Fleet moved up a gear to open up play and were three goals up with
10 minutes left. Two quick goals from Aldershot gave Fleet a shock but Fleet
held out to win this local derby.

Fleet rushed to a three goal lead by half time with some inspired hockey
with Hamble unable to reply. Goals from Steve Isaacs (2) and Rob Belsher to
become the team's leading scorer. A change of goalkeepers as a result of an
injury during the first half did not affect the team's performance.

The second half saw Fleet put a lot of pressure on Andover and from a well practiced short corner
routine, Martin Camp scored the second for Fleet. This was followed by Andrew Parkers second
from open play. Andover where awarded a controversial second penalty flick, which was well
saved by James Parker. Andover got a goal in the last seconds of the game, from a short

FLEET Mens 1st XI (7) vs. UNIV. OF PORTSMOUTH 1st XI (2)

Fleet held on to the second place in the table with a good win over a young

5 penalty corners.

prior to the Christmas break. Fleet under last years captain Martin Camp,

The second half started a bit slow for Fleet, but good all round team play
and good passing resulted in further goals from Martin Camp, Adrian
Thorndyke and Andrew Parker to give him his fourth. Petersfield tried hard
to pressure Fleets defence, but the trio of Amos, Ellis and Houston with Ben
Osbourne in goal was squeaky tight. Giving Fleet a well deserved win.

FLEET Mens 2nd XI (1) vs. SOUTHAMPTON UNI 2nd XI (2)

Fleet conceded two early goals against a talented Southampton University
Side.  The experienced Fleet side then rallied strongly and fought back and created the majority of goal
scoring opportunities in the rest of the game . Despite a Goal back midway through the second Half by the Captain Michael Meakin, Fleet failed to make the chances presented and ran out of time.

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (4) vs. HASELMERE 5th XI (1)

Fleet did not start well and were under pressure from the start. But Haselmere were unable to take advantage of there chances, due to some good defence from Martin Amos and Fleets goalkeeper.
The second half, saw a good tactical change by captain Ken McBain, which saw
some good moves from Jo Edmonds and Martin Camp, resulting in two goals a
piece, from Rod Belsher and Ken McBain. Haselmere did get some reward with a
goal also in the second half.

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (1) vs. PETERSFIELD 3rd XI (3)

A cold November morning, gave way to warm sunshine, by the time Fleet took
to the field against Petersfield. On this occasion Fleets slow start proved there downfall. With the team in
disamay, Petersfield scored two quick goals. Fleet started to find their form, but before half
time Petersfield scored a third.
Fleet started the second half more determined and committed. Regularly penetrating the
oppositions defence and going close on several occasions.
One of these forays resulted in a short corner, which was stopped dead at the top of the circle
by Denise Barnes, who drew the defender, before slipping the ball to Natasha Law who slipped it
into the bottom corner to open Fleets account.
Despite continued pressure, Fleet could not add to their goal and Petersfield took the game and
the points.

FLEET Mens 1st XI (2) vs. SOUTHAMPTON UNI 1st XI (2)

Fleet were frustrated by a young dogged Southampton University side, but
ultimately paid the price for a poor performance were several players were
below par.

Fleet started well enough dominating the opening exchanges and should have
been
Two up in the first 10 mins however it was a short corner from Soton that
provided the opening goal.

Again Fleet applied pressure but Soton got a harsh P flick that was somewhat
luckily converted to go 2-0 up.

Immediately Fleet responded through the slickest move of the game well
finished by Matt DeSouza to at least redress the balance of play.

The second half belonged entirely to Fleet however for all their pressure
the only rewards were a well-taken short corner from Alban DeSouza to level
the scores up. Ill discipline from Sands the captain led to Fleet spending
some time down to 10 men and defending doggedly but ultimately a very below
par performance cost them 2 valuable points.

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (3) vs. BASINGSTOKE BADGERS (4)

It appears that fleet do not like an early start, as most of the team was
still asleep when Basingstoke scored! However, fleet replied instantly
through Dave Wooledge. This was the pattern of the first half as Basingstoke
went ahead once more, with a well-taken goal, only for Paul Marshall to
equalise just before half time.

The game was played in late afternoon and the temperature did not help
Fleets slow starts this season, going 1-0 down in the early part of the
game. However the goal was a catalyst for the Fleet revival and they camped
in the opposition half creating chance after chance.
It was however the slick Short Corner routine for Fleet that provided the
breakthrough with Sands the skipper getting the opening goal.
Two more very well worked short corners gave Matt DeSouza another brace
making it 5 games in a row he has got two and avoided the hat trick jug...
Half time 3:1 and the expected backlash from Haslemere happened in 2nd half
with Fleet withstanding everything threw at them. A flicked short corner
gave Haslemere a second then a defensive error with 5 mins to go gave a
P.flick to the home team. However the gods were smiling on Fleet and the
Haslemere player missed the target.
The last play of the game saw a brilliant save by Philip Austin Jones to
deny an equaliser, which on the balance of play would have been harsh on the
visitors.

in the second half.
Hard work from Kathy Taylor and continued pressure from the Fleet forward
line eventually paid off with a goal from Tessa Lewinton.
Fleet will have to play more constructively against other league teams if
they want to see better results.

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (1) vs. WEST MEON (0)

On a frosty November morning Fleet with a full team prepared to meet West
Meon.
Throughout the first half Fleet battled hard and just before half-time the
ball was worked beautifully down the right; Laura Quigley put in a superb
cross and Michelle Turner fired it into the back boards.
In the second half unfortunately Fleet failed to capitalize on their
territorial advantage and despite hitting the post on two occasions the
score remained 1-0.

FLEET Mens 1st XI (3) vs. SOUTHAMPTON 1st XI (1)

De DeSouza Double Do it again!!!!

Once again Fleet are indebted to father and son Alban and Matt DeSouza for
providing the goals to finish off Soton HC and maintain Fleets impressive
start to the season.
On a beautiful November day Fleet were again not at their best and went down
to an early goal from Soton.
It was evident that this was to be a frustrating day as from then on Fleet
dominated possession but did not carve out too many clear opportunities.
It took the award of a P Flick coolly despatched by Matt to level things up
and then straight from the restart Soton lost possession to Alban DeSouza
who beat the keeper and laid on Matt for his second in 30 secs.
This removed the wind from Soton and Fleet never looked in danger from then
on, with yellow cards for Sands and rather inexplicably to all Alban DeSouza
marring the inevitable.
A well-taken Short Corner ensured another victory for a Fleet side yet to
hit the High notes.

FLEET Mens 2nd XI (4) vs. PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA 2nd XI (3)

Fleet went to the south coast to play Portsmouth and Southsea on their new
pitch. The game was slow to develop and with Fleet at times not being able
to string two passes together, held on for fifteen minutes before Portsmouth
scored, with a fantastic strike from the top of the D, as noted by Fleets
goalkeeper as it went past him.

Fleet then upped the pace and two minutes later were back in it from a short
corner that Portsmouth were unable to clear and Andrew Parker tapped over
the line. A minute later Richard Meakin broke into the opposition D and
after rounding their goalkeeper flicked the ball in to the top corner.
Richard Meakin was then involved in the third, going round two players
before passing to Anthony Fry, who in turn delivered a prefect pass to
Andrew Parker to score his second and Fleets Third.

The second half began as quickly as the first had ended and when Richard
Meakin scored his second with a prefect cross-field shot. Fleet thought they
had it sewn up. But Portsmouth scored once more, to make it 4-3 to Fleet.
Fleet had other chances to score, but were kept out by some good
goalkeeping.

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (0) vs. ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 3rd XI (1)

Fleet needed a win and some valuable points, so a new team formation was
tried.

This allowed the midfield more control of the game, so by half time goals
from Ken McBain, Rob Belsher and Adrian Thorndyke, for Fleet, set up a
promising second half.

However, Woking lifted their game, took a goal from a penalty corner and
with their 'keeper making some superb saves, Fleet ended the match with a
win a much needed boost to their confidence.

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (0) vs. ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 3rd XI (1)

On a sunny November day, Fleet with only ten players struggled to keep up
with Aldershot & Farnham. After battling hard for the first half with some
superb saves from Zoe Baker and defending from Nicky Veitch, Aldershot &
Farnham secured the only goal of the match.
Despite valiant efforts from forwards Michelle Turner and Laura Quigley and
Natasha Law in the midfield position that she plays so well, Fleet were
unable to equalise and the score remained 1-0.

FLEET Mens 1st XI (4) vs. ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 1st  XI (2)

Another Saturday another local derby.

This time Fleet were the guests of Aldershot and Farnham newly promoted and
trying to make an impact on the league but it was the more experienced team
who came through despite a couple of jitters.

Fleet sponsored by Monsoon Hartley Wintney started the game bright enough
and moved the ball smoothly and it was no surprise they went ahead through
Clark in the first half. This lead was extended by Matt DeSouza who after
returning from injury is having a prolific time in front of goal.

Aldershot pulled on back and nerves set in however DeSouza calmed the fears
by adding his second of the game.

A lack of concentration lead to Aldershot getting the score back to 3:2 but
Fleet reapplied themselves and never looked in danger of losing the game,
despite two yellow cards brought on by the tension of the occasion.

A well-earned short corner allowed Alban DeSouza the father of Matt to score
his twelfth of the season.

This result was coupled with the news that Yateley had been defeated and
allowed Fleet to reclaim top spot made for a very satisfying weekend.

HA Men's Vase Round One
FLEET Mens 1st XI (4) vs. Abingdon 1st  XI (2)

Fleet continued their good start to the season with a well-deserved victory
over Oxfordshire club Abingdon on Sunday.

On a fine autumn afternoon more suited to golf than Hockey, Fleet stuttered
initially and went 1:0 down early on.

This season however the boys are made of sterner stuff and with Matt DeSouza
in almost Owen like form in front of goal quickly equalised after a
slick-passing move.
Eggleshaw on his return to the First Eleven scored from an almost impossible
angle to stretch the lead to 2:1 at half time. John Pearl captaining the
team led from the front and a well-worked short corner resulted in a P flick
calmly converted by Matt DeSouza.
Another smooth short corner routine gave Eggleshaw his second and Fleet four
before Abingdon pulled a consolation goal back towards the end.

Another good result from a stuttering performance; watch out if Fleet hit
top gear...

FLEET Mens 2nd XI (2) vs. ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 2nd  XI (3)

An improving Fleet team, lost through a concentration lapse at the end of
the game. Fleet started disjointed and quickly went a goal behind. Rallying
Fleet regained themselves, with some quick interpassing between Anthony Fry
and Richard Eggleshaw.

After the break, Fleet dominated the game and two goals from Paul Gibson saw
Fleet take the lead. However Fleet slowed down and some unforced errors,
which Aldershot took advantage and came back into the game, equalising with
5 minutes to go.

Shortly after this Fleet where reduced to 10 men and Aldershot stole a
winner with minutes to go.

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (0) vs. ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 3rd  XI (1)

In this local derby, Fleet never really got out of first gear, with Fleet's
midfield passing braking down. It was Aldershot who started well and never
let Fleet settle and had a goal disallowed at the end of the first half.

The second half started much the same and saw Fleet go behind from a set
piece. This inspired Fleet to raise a gear, but there was not sufficient
time to gain a draw.

Bedford, Houston, Dow, Amos, Gasser, Edmonds, Shah, Woolford, Camp, Halse,
Parker, McBain, Marshall, Ellis.

FLEET Mens 1st XI (3) vs. YATELEY 1st  XI (4)

The first derby of the season resulted in a nail biting finish with Yateley
hanging on for three points.
Nerves were frayed as the game began at a high tempo and a rash challenge
led to a short corner and goal 1 for Yateley. Five minutes later the exact
same routine gave Yateley a second.
Fleet had the lion's share of the possession but in the search for a
response Yateley went further ahead with a contested third and well taken
fourth.

Throwing caution to the wind Fleet pressed on and the endless possession and
pressure resulted in a penalty flick coolly converted by Matt DeSouza.
DeSouza Snr. Alban then reduced the deficit with a short corner before a
second from Matt led to a grandstand finish. In the end the clock beat Fleet
and Yateley clung on, with Fleet rueing the poor defending at the short
corners that cost them the game.

1st Round, Open League Cup
FLEET Mens 3rd XI (1) vs. READING RETROS (2)

With the return of injured goalkeeper Mike Bedford and a good sized squad,
Fleet started the better team, against a side two divisions above them. The
pressure when put on Fleet, was well handled by the defence of Amos, Edwards
and Houston and Fleet were unlucky to be a goal down to a weak goal at half
time.

The second half saw Fleet carry on the pressure from the first half and
finally resulting in a goal from Paul Gibson, further attempts from Paul,
Andrew Parker and Martin Camp were close, but not converted.

With the possibility of extra time looming and penalty flicks, Reading
Retros got the winning goal which ended Fleets Cup journey.

Bedford, Houston, Edwards, Amos, Edmonds, Shah, Woolford, Camp, Scott,
Hasle, Thorndyke, Parker, McBain, Gibson, Bruce.

WEEK ENDING  14 OCT 2001

FLEET Mens 1st XI (1) vs. WEYMOUTH 1st  XI (0)

FLEET AWAYDAY WINNERS AGAIN

Fleet made a round trip of some 200 miles to play Weymouth, but the journey
back was extremely satisfying, as Fleet stole three points from a very well
drilled Weymouth side.
As befitting a side sponsored by Monsoon Curry House, Hartley Wintney, there
was an Indian summer in October and as the temperature rose off the pitch,
so it did on pitch. Both team's knew that this would be an early test of two
of the contenders this season and the bitty niggly performance reflected the
tension.
Uncharacteristic mistakes crept in to Fleets game and some fine goalkeeping
from Phillip Austin Jones including one save that had the crowd gasping in
amazement kept Fleet level.
In the second half excellent defending ensured no open play shots on the
Fleet goal whilst the guile of Alban DeSouza and Ed Warner up front kept the
Weymouth defence busy.
Indeed it was a piece of dogged back tracking and marvellous tackling from
DeSouza that set up Sands to sweep up the pitch draw the goalkeeper with a
shimmy reminiscent of Jimmy Greaves and set Ed Warner up for his first goal
of the Season.
Weymouth complained bitterly about the legality of the DeSouza tackle but
that old Hampshire Stalwart Mike Ward umpiring was having none of it.
The final 5 minutes stretched for an eternity as Fleet held on, though with
hindsight somewhat comfortably.
A good result and give way to the Top of the Table Derby against Yateley
next Week

Scorer Ed Warner

FLEET 2nd XI (3) vs. WEYMOUTH 2nd XI (1)

Fleet got off to good start early in the first half, after a short corner
shot was stopped, but not cleared by the Weymouth keeper, Graham Ferguson
moving in on the post was quickest to react, forcing the ball through the
keepers legs and into the backboards.

This early period of Fleet domination was followed by a Weymouth revival,
rewarded 15 minutes later after a shot was blocked bodily on the line by
Simon Dearnley, the subsequent penalty flick converted successfully despite
Fleets James Parker best efforts in goal - part of a superb performance by
this recently promoted 3rd team keeper.

An honest appraisal of 1st half efforts by Mo Mohammed and Fleets captain
Michael Meakin followed, and Fleets play lifted considerably in the second
half, with left back Matthew Gasser and his "throbbing" stick co-ordinating
with Dave Watts and Dave Wooledge to command the left hand side and with
Geoff Slack and Kevin Martin on the right, repeatedly pushing into the
Weymouth D.

Fleet went ahead early in the half, from a textbook short corner converted
by Gary Madge. This was followed by the final goal, this time after a quick
free hit on the edge of the D, taken by centre half Anthony Fry was snatched
and directed at the Weymouth goal by Gary, with fellow forward Matthew De
Souza allegedly stopping the ball on the line before tapping it over to
claim the goal, the official scorer a matter of some later clubhouse
dispute...

In summary, the experienced Fleet team were able; despite some frayed
tempers kept in check by the umpires, to overcome the energy of a young
Weymouth side, on a hot day when all players were soaked with sweat long
before the end of the game to clinch a secure and convincing victory.

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (3) vs. HAMBLE 3rd XI (6)

Without their regular keeper, Fleet were two goals down within as many
minutes as Hamble took early control of this game. Fleet responded well from
this early setback through Rob Scott and Rob Belcher, who scored his debut
goal. Fleet immediately scored, after conceding a further goal, through
Adrian Thorndyke.

But this team effort was not quite sufficient to earn a point with Hamble
adding to their goal tally late on in the game.

Woolford, Houston, Dow, Amos, Edmonds, Shah, Woolford, Camp, Scott, Hasle,
Thorndyke, Parker, McBain

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (0) vs. BASINGSTOKE 4th XI (1)

On an unusually warm morning for October Fleet travelled to Basingstoke with
a full team for this League encounter.
Both teams pushed tentatively  into their opponents halves, Basingstoke
finding their feet early on a bumpy pitch. Fleets defence was strong and
despite the Basingstoke pressure did not faulter.
The second half was much the same but after a goal mouth scramble
Basingstoke slotted the ball home for a 1-0 advantage.
Fleet did not despair and continued to push forward, penetrating the
Basingstoke defence on more than one occasion, and came close to equalising
when the ball brushed past the left-hand goal post.
The game ended 1-0 to Basingstoke with Fleet having given a very credible
performance.

WEEK ENDING  7 OCT 2001

FLEET Mens 1st XI (7) vs. BLANDFORD 1st  XI (0)

Fleet continued their steady start to the new season with a thumping victory
over Dorset Club Blandford.
However the score line does not reflect the stuttering start that Fleet made
to this potentially tricky match.
Fleet sponsored by Monsoon were nervous and edgy and Blandford were unlucky
not to go ahead hitting the post.
However once the Purple and Gold's  started to impose themselves, there was
no stopping Fleet.
An unexpected goal from Potter revelling in the twilight of his career
Opened the scoring. From then on it was left to the perennial talents of the
Peter Pan of Hampshire Hockey Alban De Souza to Score four times and firmly
establish himself at the head of the goal scoring charts...
The only blip on the day was a green card for Bennett, although all agreed
it was rather harsh.
Whilst Fleet were effective rather than polished, goals from Pearl and Clark
ensured a satisfactory victory, Sands the captain said " we must learn and
play a lot tighter if we are to make the desired impression in this league".
On the whole a deserved result but tinged with a view that Fleet have still
not totally shown what they are truly capable of.

Goal Scorers DeSouza (4), Potter, Pearl, Clark

FLEET Mens 3rd XI (1) vs. HAVANT 6th XI (3)

Playing the league winners from last year, Fleet started with their
goalkeeper injuring himself in the warm up! The Captain, Mark Woolford, put
himself in goal for the first time and with a few team changes, Fleet
started very well and played some inspired hockey.

A goal was bound to come and Havant went ahead only for Fleet to equalise
through a good move started by Martin Camp, which was converted by Paul
Marshall, shortly after. A second goal for Fleet seemed likely, but it was
Havant who took their chances. Fleet's play was very impressive but Fleet's
forwards need to convert their chances as a reward for their efforts.

WOOLFORD, EDMONDS, DOW, SHAH, CAMP M, GIBSON, HADDOCK, HASLE, BELSHER, THORNDYKE, MARSHALL, ROBERTS, CAMP J.

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (1) vs. YATELEY 2nd XI (0)

After a cautious start by Fleet with their 10 players taking time to settle
into their normal flowing game continuous pressure on the Yateley defence
paid dividends when Glynis Denny cleverly rounded the keeper to open the
scoring with a reverse stick shot.
Yateley fought back and pressurised the Fleet defence which held firm with
some diving saves from Zoe Baker.
The second half saw a revitalized Fleet with Natasha Law controlling the
midfield and this dominance not only ensured a Fleet victory but also a
deserved player of the match award for Natasha.

WEEK ENDING 30 SEP 2001

FLEET Men's 1st XI (3) vs. TROJANS 1st  XI(2)

Fleet got their season in Hants Div One of to a fine start beating one of
the much-fancied teams for the title on their somewhat bumpy home pitch.

Fleet, resplendent in the purple and gold shirts supplied by this years
sponsors Monsoon of Hartley Wintney struggled in the early stages due to the
uneven texture of the surface and resorted to trying to match Trojans at
their long ball game, a tactic that did not sit well with the silky skills
of Fleet.

Dogged defending and endless motivation from Goalkeeper and man of the match
Philip Austin Jones ensured Fleet went into the much needed half time
interval only one down.
Calamity struck early in the second half as Charles King was easily
dispossessed and a quick break led to the Trojans second goal.
To their undying credit Fleet refused to buckle and began to string together
short sharp passes that was to be the undoing of Trojans. Smart interplay on
the right led to a chance for Alban DeSouza from 3 yards and he tucked it
away with aplomb. This was the beginning of the end and a series of
well-worked passes resulted in a short corner from which Alban got his
second.
Ed Warner then missed a golden opportunity from 12 inches to put the game
beyond reach. Further sustained pressure lead to a series of penalty corners
and from a well-rehearsed routine Chris Bennett scored his first of the
season. A comeback rivalled by none this weekend.

Fleet then comfortably soaked up the Trojans pressure to record a first ever
victory at the Soton Club and left the home side as sick as the proverbial
parrots.

Scorers: Alban DeSouza (2) Chris Bennett (1)

FLEET Men's 3rd XI (3) vs. Bordon Harlequins (3)

Having lost to this side convincingly last year, this would not have been
Fleet's ideal opening league game of the season. Fleet came under pressure
from the start but went ahead, from a goal scored by Damien Desouza, much
against the run of play. This was the score to half time.

Bordon equalized and this turn out to be the pattern of the game. Further
Fleet goals came from Rob Scott and Andrew Parker. But it was our defence
who deserve the credit with Camp, Edmonds, Houston and our goalkeeper Kris
Roberts all putting in fine performances that avoided certain defeat.

FLEET Ladies 1st XI (2) vs. FARNBOROUGH 1st XI (1)

Fleet Ladies started the new league season on a great note, playing
Farnborough and winning 2-1.
In a very evenly matched and enjoyable game, Fleet conceded a goal early
into the start, but the 2nd half saw a goal
apiece scored by Jemima Cook and Tessa Lewinton.
The tenacity of the whole team should be applauded with special mention of
newcomer to the 1st X1 - Kathy Taylor,
who put in a sterling effort on the front line.

FLEET Ladies 2nd XI (2) vs. EASTLEIGH 2nd XI (3)

The first league game of the 2001-2002 season started on an overcast
September morning where a 9 man fleet team lined up against a full Eastleigh XI.

After a midfield battle Eastleigh opened the scoring by converting a short
corner. This just fuelled Fleets determination and just before half-time
they levelled the game when Laura Quigley scored an opportunist goal from
the right.

The second half saw Fleet under extreme pressure and Zoe Baker in goal made
several breathtaking saves. The pressure finally proved too much and
Eastleigh scored twice in quick succession. Fleet would not be beaten and
Michelle Turners determination paid off when she sent the ball careering
into the back of the net.

Despite further attempts on the Eastleigh gaol and a dis-allowed goal time
ran out for Fleet and the final score remained 3-2.
