Hampshire County Council is offering free electric blanket testing in Fleet on Monday 19 October. The checks are taking place throughout the day at Fleet Fire Station, 89 Connaught Road, GU51 3FP. Residents wishing to make an appointment should call 01962 833358.
Across Hampshire in 2008, 1390 blankets were tested in total and 523 failed (38 per cent) as they were either too old, worn out, had poor wiring, broken controls or offered no protection against over-heating. In the last eight years alone over 9,000 blankets have been tested in Hampshire, with 40 per cent of these failing the safety checks.
Residents with concerns about the safety of your blanket contact Hampshire County Council Trading Standards on 01962 833625 or go to www.hants.gov.uk/regulatory/tradingstandards/electricblanket.html for advice and a free fact sheet.
Last year in Fleet 85 blankets were tested with 48 passing and 37 failing.
